Only a few people really know about autism. They don't know what it is or what it represents for person life. That's why when they get to know an autist, they don't know how to treat him and probably think it's a problem. But is autism really something negative or do we just see it like that because we don't know anything about it? I think this is important because a lot of people has autism and don't even know it. Some others know they have it but think it's something negative and don't use their opportunities. Everybody should be informed about it and know at least the advantages or disadvantages it has and that it's not a mental illness. Autists have lots of advantages that non-autistic people don't have like their ability in visual or auditory tasks. Normally autistic people have a much better memory than the others. Autism is not like a headache, it's something you are born with and which you will die with. It's a way of living, thinking and behaving. On the other hand, autism has disadvantages like the difficulties to socialize and empathize, but we can minimize these issues just by trying to get them involved in our society and giving them our support. I think autism can't be described as an advantage or a disadvantage. It's just something different and we can't pretend to make them think like us.

What do you think? Is autism an advantage or a disadvantage? Is autism a gift? What do you know about autism?

Conclusion

As we have seen, Autism is not a negative issue. It’s just a lifestyle which you can consider better or not, depending on the person. Everybody has to be treated equally independently from if they have autism or not.

Michael Berger:

Autism is not really a problem for me. I think autists are simply different, like mathematicians and doctors. Everybody has its own way of seeing life and acting in the society and autists simply are more introverted, unsocial and lonely, but they also are normally more intelligent, focused on their interests and respectful. They don’t care about their social image, they don’t care about how other people see them, they just focus on doing what they want to do without trying to feign something they are not like many other people do.

I personally think that autism isn’t a problem that has to be solved, it’s a different way of living, a different lifestyle and just a different…

I agree with you, autism does not seem like a mental illness but a different way of life, with its advantages such as having a better memory and its disadvantages when socializing. I think most people see it as something negative because of its misinformation and we would have to do something to fix it.

As far as I'm concerned people in our society are misinformed about a lot of important aspects of our lives. Autism being one of those aspects. To begin with, most people do not care to get informed about autism or any other subject related if they are not directly affected. Not only are they not properly informed but also love to pretend they know a lot about a subject and judge others as they please. For this reason, society unintentionally creates a series of prejudices and stereotypes. As for autistic people, we tend to think about their condition as a disadvantage, but we don't really know about what we are talking because they are the only ones who have experienced…
